By William Lee

While there are numerous men working in the ministry, there are fewer women. Women typically work in Sunday School and other areas of the church while men are ministers, pastors and priests. These events are designed specifically for women in the ministry whom are serving the region. While this is the case, the retreats welcome all women whom desire a time of sacred renewal. As such, even if one is not an ordained minister, anyone interested in exploring the deeper self with regards to spirituality and religion is welcome to attend.

Most retreats are dedicated to providing a place in which women can undergo an experience of relaxation and renewal of spirit. As a result, the areas in which these events are held are often nature reserves and the like. Whereas, there are also some which are held at a number of different conference centers, hotels and schools depending on the access of natural scenery in the area.

Most often, women whom seek out these type of events are at a crossroads. Whether seeking emotional, physical or spiritual nurturing, most are looking for something which can not be found at home. Whereas, there are others such as in the Hindu religion in which individuals focus on concentration and inner-consciousness in hopes of building a deeper connection to a higher power.

The overall definition of a spiritual retreat is generally related to deepening and strengthening spirituality. These events are an integral part of the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Sufi and other religions. Although, the activities and workshops often differ based on the belief systems of each religion or spiritual path.

In Buddhist and Hindu faiths, the events are often seen as a way of building and deepening insight and concentration. By participating, individuals often discover a stronger sense of self as well as a stronger connection to spirit. As such, regardless of faith, almost all activities and workshops work to build a stronger sense of spirituality within the individual.

Christian churches began hosting these events based on the exercises of a Saint which many know today as St. Ignatius of Loyola. In many cases, church members provide different workshops based on the request of those in attendance. As such, regardless of religious beliefs, these events can provide a great deal of knowledge and insight along with a great deal of fun over the course of a week, two weeks or a weekend. When it comes to retreats outside the Christian faith, there have been some known to last several weeks or months depending on the focus and religious path.
